Fossils and Faith: How Do Dinosaurs Fit into the Biblical Timeline?

Blog by Tammy Fager

Toy dinosaurs on a red checkered tablecloth with spilled cereal, milk, and a colorful dinosaur placemat on a sunny morning.

Does the existence of dinosaurs disprove the Bible? The short answer is a resounding no! But let’s put this in a Christian perspective and see what we can discover.

Imagine the ground trembling beneath the thunderous gait of a Brachiosaurus, its neck stretching like a living tower to graze ancient ferns. Picture the jungle floor erupting as a fierce Velociraptor pack, razor-clawed and cunning, hunted with chilling precision. And then, the ultimate predator: the magnificent, terrifying T-rex,  a walking engine of destruction with jaws that could crush bone, its roar echoing across vast, untamed landscapes.

From the spiky armor of a Stegosaurus to the horned majesty of a Triceratops, they were nature's most spectacular and fearsome creations, etched into the very rock of our planet, a testament to a wilder, more primal Earth. Their legacy is etched in stone, a dramatic whisper from a time when giants walked the Earth.

These colossal creatures were sometimes identified as "sea dinosaurs" or "sea monsters.”  However, true dinosaurs were defined by a unique hip structure that held their limbs erect beneath the body, and they dominated the land

The existence of dinosaurs is often held up by secular science as the ultimate contradiction to the Bible. After all, the majestic skeletons of these prehistoric creatures speak of millions of years, while a traditional reading of the Book of Genesis suggests a young age of the earth.

If the Bible is truly God’s Word, how can we reconcile it with the fossil record and the reality of dinosaur fossils? The truth is, the dinosaur dilemma doesn't shatter faith; it simply challenges us to look deeper at the biblical text and the nature of the Christian community’s ongoing discussion.

The true dilemma isn't the dinosaurs themselves, but how Christians often handle the disagreement, sometimes using their particular interpretation of origins to question the faith or orthodoxy of fellow believers who hold different scientific or biblical views. Navigating this discussion requires Christians to prioritize the central message of the Gospel (God's love, Christ's death and resurrection) over the secondary debate on the mechanism and timescale of creation.

The dinosaur dilemma, therefore, invites believers to a more humble and rigorous study of Scripture, acknowledging that the Bible's primary purpose is theological and redemptive, not scientific, and encouraging greater grace for diversity of thought within the Christian family.

🦖 The Great Debate: Two Christian Theories

The core of the issue lies in the timeline. Did human beings live alongside the mighty T-rex, or did the dinosaur-like creatures become extinct long before Adam walked the planet earth? Christians generally hold two primary theories on how to integrate dinosaurs into the biblical creation account.

The First Theory: Dinosaurs in the Old Testament (Young Earth Creationism)

Monks in robes gaze upward in a domed hall with celestial murals. An open book on a pedestal. Text: Genesis: Six Literal Days of Creation.

This view, often called young earth creationism, holds that the Earth is only thousands of years old. Proponents argue that dinosaurs were created on the sixth day of creation alongside Adam, fitting squarely into a literal interpretation of Genesis.

Dinosaurs were initially created as plant-eaters (herbivores). Genesis 1:29-30, describes God giving all green plants as food to both humans and all beasts of the earth before Adam and Eve sinned. Features like large teeth or claws may have been used for non-violent purposes, like stripping vegetation

After the fall, sin brought carnivores (meat-eaters) into the world. This is seen as a consequence of the curse on creation, where animals began to prey on each other. Dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, which are known in the fossil record for their sharp teeth, are believed to have developed these predatory traits or "switched on" pre-programmed genetic information after the fall, changing from peaceful herbivores to fearsome carnivores.

  • The Missing Word: The word dinosaur wasn’t invented until 1841 by Sir Richard Owen. Therefore, the biblical authors couldn't mention dinosaurs specifically. Instead, they described these giant creatures using terms familiar to their ancient world.

  • Proof in Job: The strongest evidence is found in the Book of Job, the Old Testament’s oldest book. God challenges Job by describing two powerful living creature—Behemoth and Leviathan.

The Behemoth is a colossal herbivore whose tail "sways like a cedar tree" (Job 40:17). Its strong bones are described as "like tubes of bronze" and its limbs like "rods of iron." This beast of the earth is called the "first of the ways of God" (first of the works of God), a creature so immense that it is unparalleled. Many see this as a perfect description of a large sauropod dinosaur, which fits none of our large animals alive today.

To account for the survival of dinosaurs through the Flood, the YEC model teaches:

  • "Kinds" on the Ark: Representatives of the land-dwelling "kinds" (not necessarily every species, but a pair of each created kind) were brought onto Noah's Ark. This included the dinosaurs.

  • Young Dinosaurs: To fit the large animals onto the Ark, Noah would have likely brought young or juvenile dinosaurs since reptiles continue to grow throughout their lives.

The eventual extinction of dinosaurs (after surviving the Flood) is attributed to the drastically changed environment and climate of the post-Flood world. The harsher conditions, lack of necessary food, and human activity led to their gradual decline and eventual extinction

There are many well known Christians, such as Kirk Cameron who hold to the Young Earth view. Are dinosaurs a problem for Christians? For many, the sight of colossal dinosaur fossils in museums or the discussions surrounding evolutionary theory create confusion when trying to reconcile science with God’s Word. But actor and evangelist Kirk Cameron consistently champions a perspective that sees dinosaurs not as a challenge, but as powerful evidence for biblical truth.

Cameron, known for his outspoken Christian faith and work with ministries like Answers in Genesis, aligns firmly with Young Earth Creationism (YEC). This view posits that the planet Earth is approximately 6,000 to 10,000 years old, a timeline directly derived from a literal days reading of the Book of Genesis. From Cameron's perspective, the biblical creation account is clear: God created all land animals on the sixth day of creation, alongside human beings. This means dinosaurs and Adam coexisted in a perfect world before Adam's sin

The "Creation Institute"—most prominently the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), and organizations with similar viewpoints like Answers in Genesis (AiG)— also espouse a Young Earth Creationist (YEC) view regarding dinosaurs and the Bible.

The Creation Institute utilizes the topic of dinosaurs as a primary teaching tool (apologetic) to reinforce their interpretation of the Bible, challenging the scientific consensus on the age of the Earth and evolution.

Fossil Evidence shows the vast majority of dinosaur fossils are interpreted as being buried during the Global Flood of Noah's time.

This view is directly opposed to the mainstream scientific consensus that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago and became extinct before the appearance of humans.

The Second Theory: An Ancient World (Old Earth Views)

People in robes and lab coats gaze at celestial artwork under a domed ceiling. An open book is centered. Text: Genesis: God's Eons of Creation.

The second theory accepts the scientific timeline and believes the age of the earth is vast—billions of years. This view suggests the six "days" of Genesis were not literal days but long periods of time or a literary structure designed to teach theology, not science.

Proponents of this believe:

  • Dinosaurs Came Before Man: The existence of dinosaurs occurred millions of years before human beings. God created them during their own age, and they had become dinosaur fossils long before Adam was created.

  • The Bible’s Purpose: For these Christians, the Bible's silence is irrelevant because the Book of Genesis is not a comprehensive natural history. It is God's word, and its sole purpose is to establish that God is the Creator of all things and that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of humanity.

An example of a devout Christian who believes the world is billions of years old is Dr. Hugh Ross. He is one of the most prominent advocates of Old Earth Creationism (OEC) and specifically, a view often called Progressive Creationism.

🌟 Dr. Hugh Ross: Astronomer and Apologist

  • Profession: Astronomer, astrophysicist, and Christian apologist.

  • Age of Earth Belief: Accepts the scientific consensus that the Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old and the universe is around 13.8 billion years old.

  • Creation View: Progressive Creationism (a type of OEC). He believes God created the universe and life over billions of years, intervening supernaturally at various points in history (such as the creation of humanity).

  • Biblical Interpretation: Interprets the "days" in Genesis 1 as long, indefinite periods of time (known as the Day-Age view), rather than literal 24-hour periods. He holds a high view of biblical inerrancy, arguing that a proper reading of the original Hebrew is compatible with an ancient universe.

  • Organization: Founded Reasons to Believe (RTB), an international ministry dedicated to showing that science and the Bible are compatible and point to the same Creator.

🙏 Dinosaurs Point to the Creator

People gather under a starry dome, gazing at a dinosaur skeleton and a telescope. An elderly man reads a book. Awe and wonder fill the scene.

Regardless of which theory you align with, the essential truth remains unshaken: dinosaurs do not disprove the Bible; they glorify God.

The only way the Bible is disproven is if God isn't who He says He is. The magnificence of the reptilian dinosaurs—whether they were tamed by Adam in a perfect world or dominated the ancient culture of Earth millions of years ago—simply demonstrates the unbounded creative power of our Creator.

The real conflict isn't between dinosaur fossils and God's Word; it's between two different interpretations of the early chapters of Genesis. Both are held by sincere believers who uphold the authority of the biblical record.

The majesty of a dragon-like animal described in the Old Testament or revealed in the layers of the fossil record ultimately points to the same truth: God created them all, and He is infinitely greater.

Dinosaurs don't disprove the Bible; they offer a powerful testament to the limitless power and imagination of God.

Imagine the staggering creativity it took to design a creature like the Argentinosaurus—a beast of incredible size—and then to perfectly manage the timing of its rise and fall on the planet. Whether you believe they lived alongside Adam or millions of years before, the fossils speak a clear truth: God is the ultimate Master Creator.

For the Christian, every new scientific discovery, from the largest dinosaur bone to the most distant galaxy, should not create a crisis of faith, but an opportunity for greater worship. After all, a bigger creation points to an even bigger God.

Strengthening Faith Through God's Majesty

Reflecting on the dinosaurs should deeply strengthen a Christian's conviction about the greatness of God. If He could design and sustain such magnificent beasts, His promises for humanity—including salvation, eternal life, and daily provision—are anchored in an almighty, unwavering, and infinitely capable Creator. The very presence of these prehistoric giants underscores the biblical declarations of God's majesty, inspiring greater awe and worship. They are a tangible, fossilized reminder that we serve a God who is truly amazing, limitless, and worthy of all praise

THE UNFOLDING MYSTERY

Let the majestic bones of an ancient creature remind you that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is also the God of the T. Rex and the galaxies. He is the eternal constant in a world of change, and every discovery—be it a fragile leaf print or a massive skeleton—simply affirms the magnitude of His plan. Our faith is not fractured by facts; it is deepened by them.

Go forth, then, with confidence, knowing that the God who spoke the stars into existence and laid the foundations of the Earth is the same God who holds your life securely in His hands. Believe what you see, and see what you believe.

Thanks Tammy for your research in presenting alternate views. I did a rabbit trail on Dr Hugh Ross whose deeper beliefs are on reasons.org and biologos.org. and YouTube videos. The second view is too much of a ‘stretch’ beyond what’s recorded in the Bible. On both sites I read beyond the ‘statements of the Christian faith’
