Study Guide: Acts 14:8-20
From "Gods" to Garbage Heaps

Imagine you are a local business owner in a small, out-of-the-way town. Life is predictable until two strangers walk in and, with a single command, heal the man who has been sitting paralyzed in the town square for forty years. Your first thought isn't "I should read the Bible." Your first thought is "The legends are true! The gods have finally come back to check on us!" Within minutes, the whole town is in a frenzy, bringing out prizes and sacrifices to keep these "gods" happy so they don't destroy the city.
But then, the strangers start screaming that they aren't gods at all. They tell you your traditions are worthless. In a heartbeat, your excitement turns to embarrassment, and your embarrassment turns to a burning rage. This is the story of Lystra—a town that went from worshiping the messenger to trying to execute him in the span of a single afternoon.
YOU'RE INVITED!

Setting the Scene
To understand Acts 14, we have to look at where Paul and Barnabas are. They have traveled about 20 miles south of Iconium into the rural hills of Lycaonia, specifically to a town called Lystra.

The Geography of the "Backcountry"
Lystra was a Roman colony, but it was isolated. It sat in a beautiful, fertile valley, but it was "off the beaten path" compared to the major trade routes. Most people there didn't speak the high-society Greek or Latin; they spoke a local dialect called Lycaonian. This language barrier plays a huge role in the chaos that follows because Paul and Barnabas likely didn't realize what the crowd was shouting until the bulls and flower crowns actually showed up.
The Missing Synagogue
In every other city, Paul started at the synagogue. He would use the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament) to show how Jesus fulfilled ancient promises. But in Lystra, there is no mention of a synagogue. This is a purely pagan audience. These people didn't know Abraham, Moses, or the Ten Commandments. They knew the mountains, the rain, and the Greek myths.
The Local "Ghost Story": Zeus and Hermes
The biggest piece of context for understanding the chaos in Lystra isn't found in a Bible verse, but in a "ghost story" that haunted the local culture. To the people of Lystra, what happened with Paul wasn't just a miracle—it was a terrifying "round two" of a famous legend recorded by the Roman poet Ovid around 8 AD.

The Story of Baucis and Philemon: Legend said the gods Zeus and Hermes once visited this exact region disguised as poor, tired travelers. They went door-to-door to 1,000 homes, asking for a place to rest. Every single person turned them away—except for one poor, elderly couple named Baucis and Philemon. Even though they had almost nothing, they welcomed the strangers and prepared to kill their only goose to feed them.
In response, the gods revealed themselves. They sent a massive flood that wiped out the entire town, but they spared the old couple and turned their tiny shack into a golden temple. Legend says that when the couple finally died, they were turned into two trees—a Linden and an Oak—growing from the same trunk.
Why this matters: When Paul heals the lame man, the people of Lystra think the "travelers" have returned. They assume the quiet, regal Barnabas is Zeus and the talkative Paul is Hermes. They aren't being "religious" in a way we recognize—they are in a state of total panic. They are desperate to "get it right" this time so they don't get wiped out by another flood.
In-Depth Study Summary
Here is a deeper look at the key moments from our study of the Lystra mission and why they matter for us today.
1. The Expectant Gaze & The Stamp of Authority (v. 8-10)
Paul encounters a man who has been unable to walk since the day he was born (Acts 14:8). As Paul speaks, he notices the man has "faith to be healed." Paul commands him to stand up, and the man doesn't just shuffle—he leaps.

The Depth: In a town with no Bible and no Jewish history, Paul had no "credentials." This miracle acted like a Notary Seal or a Stamp of Authority. In the ancient world, a king’s signet ring made a message official. God was "stamping" Paul’s message with power so the locals would know these men spoke for the One True God. It was meant to give his message credibility so they would stop and listen.
2. The Cultural Collision (v. 11-13)
The local priest of Zeus immediately brings out bulls and flower wreaths to the city gates (Acts 14:13). This is a transactional mindset. In their culture, you give the gods a gift so they don't hurt you. They were bowing down to the "wrapping paper" (the messengers) because they couldn't see the "Giver" (Jesus) inside.
3. Preaching to the "Unchurched" (v. 14-18)
Paul and Barnabas tear their clothes—a Jewish sign of absolute horror—and rush into the crowd. Since they didn't know the Bible, Paul used General Revelation—the fingerprints God leaves on nature. He points to the rain, the crops, and the "joyful food" they eat (Acts 14:17). He tells them to turn from these "worthless things" (their idols) to the Living God who actually provides the rain they love.
4. The Sudden Flip: From "Gods" to Garbage (v. 19-20)
Opponents from Antioch and Iconium arrive and "poison the well." They convince the crowd that Paul is a fraud. The same people who were ready to offer sacrifices now pick up rocks to kill Paul.
The Depth: Stoning traditionally involved throwing a person off a high ledge to break their bones before burying them under stones. They "thought he was dead" and dragged him to the town garbage heap (Acts 14:19). But as the believers gathered around him, Paul "rose up" and walked right back into the city. This resilience was a supernatural sign of the Holy Spirit’s power.
Modern Discovery: The Excavation of Lystra
For a long time, the exact location of Lystra was a bit of a mystery, but modern archaeology is bringing this Bible story to life. Lystra is located at a site known as Zoldera Höyük (the Tel of Lystra) near the village of Hatunsaray in Turkey.
What We Are Learning from the Tel:
Recent excavations led by Turkish archaeologists and supported by Selçuk University have begun to peel back the layers of this ancient city.

Confirming the Colony: Discoveries of Roman coins and inscriptions have confirmed that Lystra was indeed a Roman colony, just as the Bible and history suggest.
The Religious Hub: Archaeologists are looking for the foundations of the Temple of Zeus that was "just outside the city" (Acts 14:13). Finding these structures helps us visualize exactly where the priest would have brought the bulls to meet Paul and Barnabas.
A Multi-Layered History: The "Tel" (a mound made of layers of ancient cities) shows that people lived here for thousands of years, from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period. This tells us that Lystra was a stable, deeply traditional place where customs were not easily changed.

Why We Look at "Wrong" and "Right" Applications

The heart of this passage is about human nature. We are all prone to making God in our own image or trying to use Him for our own ends. If we don't look at the "wrong" ways to use this text, we might miss the fact that we often act just like the people of Lystra.
🛑 Applying it Wrong: The Common Pitfalls
The "Jesus as an Accessory" Agenda: Some treat Jesus like a "Zeus upgrade" who exists to make your current lifestyle more successful without requiring you to change your heart.
The "Faith as a Performance" View: Many take verse 9 ("faith to be healed") to mean that if you aren't healed, it’s your fault because you didn't have enough "faith units." Paul’s goal was the message of the Gospel, not a magic show.
The "Miracle Chaser" View: Focusing only on the supernatural while ignoring that the miracle actually caused confusion for the crowd. If we chase miracles without the message, we end up with "hype" that disappears the moment life gets hard.
✅ Applying it the Right Way:
Contextual Clarity: Start by realizing Paul is speaking to people who have no Bible. We should look at our own "unchurched" neighbors the same way. We don't start with religious jargon; we start with the "witness" of God's goodness in their everyday lives.
The Resilience Mindset: Paul didn't quit when things got ugly. Success in the Kingdom isn't about popularity; it’s about persistence in the face of "stones."
The Anti-Idol Check: Ask yourself: "Am I trying to sacrifice 'bulls' to God to keep Him happy?" If you feel like you have to perform to be loved, you’re in the "Lystra mindset." The Right Way is to see that Jesus has already provided the ultimate sacrifice.
Questions to Chew on and Discuss:
These questions are designed to help you personally dig deeper into the passage.
Nature’s Witness: Paul pointed to the "rain and fruitful seasons" to prove God’s goodness. What are some "fingerprints" of God in your own life that remind you of His goodness?
The Crowd’s Opinion: Paul went from being a "god" to being "garbage" in a few hours. How do you protect your heart from being crushed when people change their minds about you?
The Persistence of Paul: After being left for dead, Paul walked back into the city. Is there a difficult situation in your life that you feel like quitting on, but God might be asking you to "rise up" and re-enter?
Journey Group Discussion Starter:
Whether you're helping facilitate a small group, talking about this passage one-on-one with a friend, or even just need a topic to guide the conversation at the dinner table, these ideas can help start a good group conversation before you dive into the passage and questions in this study guide.
The Tradition Talk: "What is a 'cultural tradition' or a family habit you grew up with that made it hard for you to understand the true Gospel when you first heard it?"
The Notary Seal: "If someone asked you for 'proof' that God is active in the world today, what story from your own life would you share as your 'Stamp of Authority'?"
Sum it Up

In Lystra, we see that human popularity is a trap, but God’s grace is a foundation. People will love you when you do what they want, and they will "stone" you when you don't. Paul teaches us that we don't need a Bible degree to see God’s goodness—it’s written in the rain and the harvest. Most importantly, this story shows us that even when the world throws us on the garbage heap, the power of the Holy Spirit can help us stand back up and keep walking.
Experience the God of the Wilderness

Throughout the Bible, the desert isn't just a place of heat and sand; it is God’s favorite classroom. It’s where He took Moses to see the burning bush, where He shaped the Israelites into a nation, and where Jesus was prepared for His ministry.
There is something about stepping away from the "safe structures" of the city and into the stillness of the high desert that clears the noise and lets you hear God's voice.
