Study Guide: Acts 9:32-42
Signposts on the Coastal Road

If you’ve ever driven across the wide-open plains of South Dakota on Interstate 90, you know the "Wall Drug" phenomenon. Hundreds of miles before you ever see the store, the signs start appearing. They tell you about the free ice water, the five-cent coffee, and the giant jackalope. By the time you actually pull into the parking lot, you aren't surprised by what you find. You’ve been prepared for it by a hundred different billboards.
The miracles we see in the Bible work the exact same way. They are God’s "Wall Drug" signs. They aren't the final destination, but they are designed to get us excited about what is waiting for us at the end of the road. In this study, we watch Peter walk past a few of these billboards and realize that the Kingdom of God is a lot closer than he thought.

Setting the Scene:

To understand this passage, we have to look at where Peter is. He has left the "headquarters" in Jerusalem and is traveling through the coastal plains. This area was the "frontier." It was a place where ancient Jewish traditions lived right next door to Roman culture and Greek philosophy.
Lydda: This was a busy town located at a major crossroads. It was a place of business and travel.
Joppa: This was an ancient seaport. It’s the same place where Jonah hopped on a boat to run away from God centuries earlier.
Peter isn't here to sightsee. He is visiting "the saints"—a term that simply means God's people who have set themselves apart to follow The Way of Jesus. He is checking on the small groups of believers scattered outside the big city. As he moves toward the coast, he is physically inching closer to the non-Jewish world, standing on the edge of the Mediterranean and looking out at the rest of humanity.
Deep Dive: The Podcast Summary Expanded
In our live teaching, we looked at how Peter acts as an "apprentice" to Jesus, doing exactly what he saw his Master do. Here is a deeper look at those moments:
1. The Man Who Was "Part of the Furniture" (Acts 9:32–35)
In Lydda, Peter meets Aeneas. This man had been paralyzed for eight years. In the ancient world, there was no social security or disability pay. If you couldn't walk, you were often invisible—tucked away in a corner, dependent on others for every basic need.
The Command: Peter doesn't make a show of it. He says, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat" (Acts 9:34).
The "Echo": This is a direct echo of when Jesus healed a paralyzed man in Mark 2. Peter is making it clear that he isn't the one with the power. He is just the messenger.
The Result: The miracle was a megaphone. The text says the whole town turned to the Lord because they saw a man they had known as "broken" for nearly a decade suddenly cleaning up his own room and walking the streets.
2. The Power of a Seamstress (Acts 9:36–39)
In Joppa, we meet Tabitha (her Greek name was Dorcas). She is the only woman in the New Testament explicitly called a "disciple."
Ordinary Ministry: Tabitha didn't have a pulpit; she had a needle. She spent her life making "coats and garments" for widows—the most vulnerable people in society. In a time before factories, a warm coat was a literal lifesaver.
The Grief: When she died, the community didn't just lose a friend; they lost their protector. When Peter arrived, the room was filled with weeping widows showing him the physical proof of her kindness. This shows us that God’s people are defined by their tangible love, not just their words.
3. The Miracle at the Coast (Acts 9:40–42)
Peter sends everyone out of the room, kneels, and prays.
The "Tabitha" Connection: When Peter says, "Tabitha, get up," it sounds almost identical to when Jesus raised a little girl by saying "Talitha koum" (Mark 5:41). Peter is walking in the shadow of his King.
The Purpose: Why did God work through Peter to do this? It was a "Signature." It proved that the name and power of Jesus were now moving out of Jerusalem and into the wider Jewish world.
Why We Look at "Wrong" and "Right" Applications

We look at how to apply this passage because "miracle stories" can be very confusing for modern readers. If we just read them as "magic tricks" from a long time ago, we miss the point. If we try to force them into our own modern agendas, we can actually hurt people’s faith. We have to look at these stories through the lens of God’s "Big Picture."
🛑 Applying it Wrong: The Common Pitfalls
The "Healings for Everyone" Agenda: Some people use this to say that if you have enough faith, no one you love will ever die or be sick. But even in the Bible, most people eventually died. This passage isn't a promise of a pain-free life; it’s a promise of a future world where pain is gone.
The "Superstar" View: We go wrong when we think Peter is the only one who matters here. We focus so much on the "big" miracle that we ignore Tabitha’s "small" sewing. If you think your life only counts if you can raise the dead, you’re missing the holiness of the "coats and garments."
The "Formula" Trap: People try to copy Peter’s exact words or posture (kneeling, sending people out) thinking it’s a "recipe" for a miracle. God isn't a vending machine; He is a King who decides when and where to put up a Signpost.
✅ Applying it the Right Way:
To get the most out of this study, approach it with these three things in mind:
See the Signposts: Approach this passage like those Wall Drug signs. The healing of Aeneas is a signpost for a world where no one is paralyzed. The raising of Tabitha is a signpost for the day when death is defeated forever. These are "trailers" for the "Full Movie" of God’s Kingdom.
Value Tangible Kindness: Recognize that Tabitha’s sewing was just as much a "work of God" as Peter’s prayer. Applying this right means looking for ways to use your "ordinary" skills (cooking, fixing, listening) to care for God's people.
Trust the Timeline: Understand that these miracles were specifically timed to help the movement of Jesus break out into new territories. They were God’s way of saying, "I am with these men as they go to the frontier."
Questions to Chew on and Discuss:
These questions are designed to help you personally dig deeper into the passage.
The "Signpost" Idea: If these miracles are like "movie trailers" for God’s future Kingdom, which part of that "full movie" (a world without pain, sickness, or death) are you most looking forward to?
The Ordinary Gift: Tabitha was a hero because she noticed people and made them coats. Who is someone in your life that feels "invisible" right now, and what simple thing could you do to help them?
The Apprentice: Peter did exactly what he saw Jesus do. When people look at your life, what "moves" or actions of yours remind them of Jesus?
Journey Group Discussion Starter:
Whether you're helping facilitate a small group, talking about this passage one-on-one with a friend, or even just need a topic to guide the conversation at the dinner table, these ideas can help start a good group conversation before you dive into the passage and questions in this study guide.
The "Wall Drug" Conversation: "We talked about how God has been putting up signposts for centuries—through Abraham, Moses, David, and now Peter. Share a time in your own life when you saw a 'signpost' (a small miracle, a timely word, or a sense of peace) that helped you stay on the road when you felt like giving up."
Sum it Up

While the world was focused on big politics, Peter was in small towns helping "small" people. These stories prove that the power of Jesus isn't just for famous leaders; it’s for a paralyzed man in a bed and a kind woman who made coats. These miracles are Signposts—billboards on the highway of history telling us that a new world is coming. We take hope in these signs today, not because we’ve arrived, but because they prove we are on the right road to a Kingdom without death.
Experience the God of the Wilderness

Throughout the Bible, the desert isn't just a place of heat and sand; it is God’s favorite classroom. It’s where He took Moses to see the burning bush, where He shaped the Israelites into a nation, and where Jesus was prepared for His ministry.
There is something about stepping away from the "safe structures" of the city and into the stillness of the high desert that clears the noise and lets you hear God's voice.
Are you willing to come to the wilderness for a time of preparation and growth? If you feel God moving you out of your comfort zone and into a deeper dependence on Him, we invite you to join us on our off-grid property in Northwest Arizona.
