What Do We Do When Someone We Love Drifts Away from Jesus?

Few things are more painful than watching someone you love walk away from the faith.

Whether it is a family member, a close friend, a spouse, or someone you once sat beside in

church every Sunday, seeing a person turn away from Jesus can leave you feeling hurt, confused, and wondering what went wrong.

In recent years, many Christians have watched loved ones experience a faith crisis, a slow spiritual drift, or even a complete departure from Christianity. Some call it "deconstruction." Others describe it as backsliding or losing faith. Whatever term is used, the reality is heartbreaking for those who care deeply about them.

You may find yourself asking difficult questions: Did I miss something? Could I have done more? Should I have spoken up sooner? Did I somehow fail them?

While those feelings are completely

understandable, we must remember that every person is ultimately responsible for their own response to Christ. Throughout Scripture, we see individuals who witnessed God's power and truth firsthand yet still chose to walk away. When someone abandons their faith, it does not mean you have failed.

God does not want you to carry the weight of confusion or guilt. He calls us to remain steadfast in our own faith while continuing to love, pursue, and pray for those who have wandered.

Understanding Why People Drift

Everyone has a story and every story is unique. Some people become deeply discouraged by suffering and unanswered questions. Others struggle with intellectual doubt or personal disappointment.

Many have experienced "church hurt”, pain caused by the actions of leaders or fellow believers, and find it incredibly difficult to separate the failures of flawed people from the perfection of Jesus Christ.

Sometimes, people are just plain tired of hypocrisy within organized religion and decide they can follow God just fine on their own. While their pain may be entirely valid, isolation is rarely the answer God intends.

The enemy loves to separate believers from the Christian community because isolation makes spiritual drift much easier.

Countless parents have experienced the heartbreak of watching their kids, raised in a Christian home, slowly walk away from the faith to pursue their own way, often questioning where they went wrong.

While we may not always understand the exact reasons why someone leaves, we can trust that God sees their heart and continues to pursue them.

Because God designed us to walk together, to encourage one another, and to help carry each other's burdens.

Stay Firm in Your Own Faith

When someone else's spiritual life seems to be unraveling, it can be tempting to allow their

doubts to shake your own confidence.

But we must remember that our faith was never meant to rest upon another person's spiritual journey. Our foundation is Jesus Christ alone.

When someone walks away from God, we may grieve deeply for them, but we must not allow their choices to weaken our own convictions. Instead, let it be a catalyst for staying rooted in Scripture, remaining faithful in prayer, and continuing to walk closely with Jesus.

The faithfulness of God does not change simply because someone chooses to walk away from Him.

How to Help Someone Who Is Drifting

One of the challenges in modern culture is that faith is often treated as a strictly private matter. We can spend years attending church with someone without ever having a transparent, meaningful conversation about their spiritual life. We greet one another with a quick, "How are you?" and receive the predictable response, "Fine." Then we move on.

But what if we risked asking a deeper question?

• "What is your walk with Jesus like right now?"

  
  

• "How is your faith really doing?"

  
  

• "How can I pray for you in this season?"

  
  

Questions like these invite honesty and reflection. They communicate that you care about more than just appearances.

Many people who are struggling spiritually are simply waiting for someone to notice.

They may be carrying doubts, fears, disappointments, or temptations that nobody else knows about.

Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is break the ice. If we don’t reach out, we may never know what they are truly processing.

The Essential Role of Community

God never intended for Christians to walk alone. The early church devoted themselves to fellowship, prayer, teaching, and encouraging one another. Biblical community was not an optional add-on to the Christian life; it was essential for survival.

If someone begins drifting away from faith, we shouldn't just shrug our shoulders and assume it is none of our business. Out of genuine love, we should check on them. We are here to strengthen the weary, encourage the discouraged, and gently restore those who are struggling.

"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2

Never Stop Praying for the Prodigal

The parable of the prodigal son offers beautiful hope to every believer who has watched a loved one wander. People can drift incredibly far from God and still find their way home.

God's love continues to pursue those who have walked away, and His grace is often working behind the scenes even when we cannot see it. That is why we must never stop praying.

• Pray for opportunities to share truth with grace.

  
  

• Pray for ultimate restoration and healing.

  
  

Trust God to do what only He can do. The seeds you plant through prayer, unconditional love, and quiet faithfulness today may bear beautiful fruit years down the road.

A Final Encouragement

If someone you love has left the faith, do not lose hope.

Continue loving them, continue praying for them, continue speaking truth wrapped in grace, and continue strengthening your own walk with Jesus.

You cannot control another person's choices, but you can remain a steady, safe, and Christlike presence in their life.

Sometimes the most radical thing we can do is refuse to give up on someone who has wandered. Keep praying. Keep loving. Keep believing that God is still at work—because the Good Shepherd never stops searching for His lost sheep.
