Ever feel like being a Christian is just a never-ending list of rules, or maybe you're not even sure what it really means to be "born again"? You're not alone. Lots of folks get tangled up in what they think Christianity should be, missing out on the simple, powerful truth of what it is. Today, we're cracking open 1 John 5:1-11 to cut through the noise and get straight to the heart of what it means to follow Jesus. It's about getting back to basics: faith, real love, and the victory that's already yours.
Before we dig in, take a few minutes to read 1 John 4:7-21 on your own. Grab your Bible and read it in at least two different translations. We suggest choosing two from this list: NIV, ESV, NLT, NKJV, NASB. This will help you get a better feel for the passage before we break it down together.
Setting the Scene: 1 John 5:1-12

John wrote this letter a long time ago to people who were getting confused by some fancy talkers trying to mess up their faith. These smooth operators were trying to say you needed some secret knowledge to be "in," or that Jesus wasn't fully human. John basically said, "Nope! That's not how it works." He hammered home that real faith isn't about knowing some secret handshake; it's about loving God and doing what He says.
Think of it like this: if you really know someone, you don't need a cheat sheet. You just get them. That's the kind of knowing John's talking about with Jesus.
In verse 1, John talks about being "born of God." Now, that might sound a bit out there, but it's simpler than you think. It's not just some churchy phrase; it's about a complete new start. Like when a baby is born, it's a whole new person with a new life. Being "born again" as a Christian means your whole inside gets wired differently. Your desires change, your priorities shift. If God's your Father, then you're naturally going to love Him. And if you love Him, you're going to love His other kids – your fellow believers. That's not an option; it's just what happens when you're truly part of the family. Want to unpack "born again" even more? Tune in to our live daily Bible podcast tomorrow, Wednesday, for Episode #544. We'll be diving deep into this concept in our "Word of the Week" segment!
Verses 2 and 3 connect loving God with following His rules, and here's the kicker: His rules aren't a burden. Think about a good boss who gives you clear instructions – it makes your job easier, right? It's not about being weighed down; it's about freedom and real joy. When you love God, doing what He says isn't a chore; it's just a natural response, not something you do to earn your way into heaven.

Then we hit the awesome part in verse 4: "Everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world." This "victory" isn't something you have to scratch and claw for; it's already given to you because of your faith. The "world" here isn't just the dirt under your boots; it's all the messed-up stuff and bad influences that try to pull you away from God. Your faith in Jesus – who He is (fully God and fully man) and what He did for us on the cross – that's the tool that cuts through all that worldly garbage.
Verses 6-8 bring up "three witnesses": water, blood, and the Spirit. Sounds a bit mysterious, but it's really a straightforward way of saying God provided plenty of proof. The water likely points to Jesus' baptism, when He officially started His work. The blood is about His death on the cross, where He paid the price for our mistakes. And the Spirit, well, that's the Holy Spirit, who constantly reminds us of who Jesus is and what He accomplished. Put those three together, and you've got solid, undeniable proof of Jesus – that He's both God and man, and He's our Savior. Like a jury needing three reliable witnesses, God gave us clear evidence.
Finally, in verses 9-11, John talks about God's own testimony about His Son. If we'd take a regular person's word for something, shouldn't we trust God's word even more? This isn't just some spoken declaration; it's something deep down inside of you if you believe. It's the rock-solid certainty of eternal life, right here, right now. It's not some maybe-someday thing; it's a promise you can bank on.
Rabbit Trail: The Power of Witnesses

Let's pause right here at "witnesses" in 1 John 5:6-8 and dig into what John and his original audience would have understood. When John talks about not just one, but three witnesses—water, blood, and the Spirit—it's not just a casual observation; it's a powerful legal and cultural statement.
The Old Testament Foundation: For any Jewish person in John's day, the idea of witnesses was ingrained from childhood through the Old Testament Law. The Law of Moses was very strict on this. You couldn't just accuse someone or put them to death based on one person's say-so.
Deuteronomy 19:15 clearly states: "A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established."
This rule was about ensuring justice and preventing false accusations. It was a safeguard for the accused, making sure that serious matters were proven beyond a reasonable doubt. It meant that a claim wasn't just some rumor; it had verifiable, outside support.
Cultural and Historical Context: In ancient courts, there were no police forensics or DNA testing. The primary way to establish truth was through eyewitness testimony. Therefore, the credibility and number of witnesses were everything. A matter established by two or three witnesses was considered legally solid, undeniable. If you had two witnesses, it was good. If you had three, it was even stronger, leaving no room for doubt.
What John Knew and Assumed: John, being a Jew and writing to a community familiar with these laws and customs (whether Jewish or Gentile converts taught the basics of the faith), knew that mentioning witnesses carried significant weight. When he says there are three witnesses for Jesus—water, blood, and the Spirit—he's not just listing things; he's building an airtight case.
Water (Jesus' baptism): This was Jesus' public entry into ministry, where God the Father spoke from heaven and the Spirit descended like a dove, affirming Jesus as His Son. It was a public event, a formal declaration of who Jesus was.
Blood (Jesus' death): This refers to Jesus' crucifixion, His atoning sacrifice. This was also a public event, witnessed by many, confirming His identity as the Messiah who died for sins.
The Spirit (the Holy Spirit's testimony): This is the internal witness within believers, the power of God that convicts and transforms hearts, confirming the truth of Jesus. It's an ongoing, living testimony.
Why Three is So Important: For John, the fact that there are three witnesses goes beyond just meeting the legal minimum. It signifies absolute certainty and overwhelming evidence. It's like saying, "Not only is this legally sound, it's undeniably true. God isn't leaving any room for doubt here."
To a modern reader, it's like a prosecutor presenting a case with not just one, but multiple, independent, and verifiable pieces of evidence that all point to the same conclusion. It's not just circumstantial; it's rock-solid proof. John is telling his readers that the truth about Jesus isn't based on flimsy evidence or secret knowledge; it's established by God Himself through undeniable, public events and the continuing work of His Spirit. He's making sure they understand that their faith isn't built on shaky ground, but on a foundation that has been proven beyond any shadow of a doubt by the ultimate authority—God.

EXCITING DREAMS TAKING SHAPE
From road life to dream home base! 🚚➡️🏡 After years of traveling, God led us to an incredible spot in Arizona to build a ministry hub & bless others. You won't believe how it happened! ✨ Watch our new video to see the first glimpse! 👇
For the past three years, Kaila and I have been living life on the road, exploring and serving wherever God leads us. It's been an incredible journey, but carrying everything we own and constantly navigating started us dreaming of something more: a home base. A place to lighten our load, simplify, and most importantly, create a space where we can truly bless others. This video is the first glimpse of that dream!
As full-time traveling missionaries and founders of YourJesusJourney.com, we live on a modest income, relying on the generosity of others to support our three-fold ministry vision: helping people understand the Bible in context, finding Christian friends, and equipping disciple makers. So, you might be wondering, how are we able to pursue something this ambitious? About a year and a half ago, Kaila’s beloved dad passed away. With his passing, Kaila inherited their expansive family home and horse property on the breathtaking North Shore of Lake Superior, in beautiful Ontario—the place she grew up, where she rode her first bike and horse, and learned to drive. After much prayer and seeking God’s guidance, we decided to sell the property. What you see here came as a result of that incredible blessing, and all the work unfolding in the next year or two will also be funded by it.
Ultimately, it’s all God’s money, God’s land, and God’s resources—we simply want to be faithful stewards, investing what He’s entrusted us with to serve our family, friends, and help countless others experience God and the lessons of the Bible in a whole new way. We prayed and searched high and low, from Texas to Idaho, and God consistently drew us back to this breathtaking location in Northwest Arizona. Imagine: a spot overlooking the world's densest Joshua Tree forest, just minutes from the Grand Canyon, with epic mountains in our backyard! Our deepest desire for this place is to be a haven for renewal. A spot where our kids can visit, Kaila's mom can stay, and friends can gather. But even bigger than that, it's a launchpad for new ministry—a place to invite people to rest, recharge, share meals, grow friendships, and truly be renewed in the desert sun. We're already dreaming of leading hikes, teaching Bible lessons, and hosting retreats.
There’s a lot of exciting work ahead, but we're stepping out in faith, trusting God every step of the way. We’re so excited to share this new chapter with our family, friends, and all of you!
