When You're Running on Empty: Overcoming Christian Burnout with God's Strength

For the days when you are doing all the right things, but feel completely drained.

Have you ever had a week where you woke up already exhausted? You look at your to-do

Waking up exhausted

list, your family’s schedule, or your stressful work inbox, and your very first thought is, “I don’t have what it takes to get through today.”

When we hit that wall of physical, emotional, or spiritual exhaustion, many of us begin to quietly battle what is known as Christian burnout. We think a faithful believer should be able to handle it all with a giant smile. We know the scripture tells us not to grow weary in well-doing, but when we look at our lives, we realize we are completely depleted. We scroll through social media and see others who seem to be effortlessly juggling careers, flawless parenting, active ministries, and deep daily devotions, and we wonder what is wrong with our faith.

If you are in a season where you feel completely drained, please take a deep breath. You don't need a lecture on trying harder. You need to know how to move from a place of human striving into finding strength in God. And also to remember that you are not alone in these feelings.

Redefining God's Power for Exhaustion

When the apostle Paul wrote his letter to the church in Colossae, he didn't pray for their circumstances to become easier.

Instead, in Colossians 1:11, he prayed that they would be:

“...strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy...”

When we look for encouraging Bible verses about exhaustion, our minds usually seek out promises of a quick escape or a sudden, dramatic miracle. We think it would be perfect if God would display His glorious, sovereign power by removing our heavy workloads, fixing our broken relationships, or instantly clearing our schedules.

Receive rest from God

But that’s exactly where we need to stop and look at what that universe-sized, glorious power is actually meant to do.

God doesn't pour His supernatural energy into your life so you can become a tireless superhero who never needs a break. He doesn't give it to you so you can sprint through life without feeling the weight of your limitations.

He strengthens you with all might so that you can have endurance and patience with joy.

The Three Divine Gifts for a Weary Heart

When you are facing intense burnout, God’s strength doesn't always manifest as a surge of physical adrenaline. Can you imagine how we would all be running around if that were the case? In His wisdom, it more often shows up as three quiet internal anchors:

1. Supernatural Endurance

The Greek word for endurance used here is hypomone. It literally means "to remain under." It’s the ability to stay under a heavy load without collapsing, turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms, or running away. When you are tempted to completely throw in the towel, God’s strength gives you the quiet stamina to simply show up for one more day.

2. Gracious Patience

Patience (makrothymia) is specifically about how we treat people when we are under pressure. It's easy to be kind when we are well-rested and everything is going perfectly. But when we are run-down, our fuse is short. But then we are reminded that God's power gives us a supernatural capacity to keep our hearts soft and our words gentle, even when our patience is running on empty.

3. Joy in the Midst of the Mud

This is the most awesome part of the text. Anyone can grit their teeth, white-knuckle their way through a hard season, and survive out of pure, bitter obligation. But to endure a trial with actual joy? That is something you cannot manufacture out of your own willpower. It requires the grace of God and the deep assurance of the gospel anchoring your soul.

Moving from Performance to Grace

If we want to find strength in God, we have to trade a performance-driven mindset for a

Colorful cross with Bible affirmations like Called, Loved, Redeemed, Saved, Blessed, and a heart reading I AM... on a radiant background

gospel-driven one.

Here is the liberating truth of the gospel: We are not trying to earn God's favor by grinding ourselves into dust. Through Jesus, we already have it.

When we realize that our identity and worth do not depend on our flawlessness or our spiritual productivity, the exhausting striving stops. We stop trying to carry the weight of the universe on our own shoulders, and we finally start relying on His glorious power.

3 Practical Steps for When You're Exhausted This Week

If you feel like you are running on fumes today, don't try to reinvent your whole life. Start with these three small, grace-filled shifts:

  1. Pray for Endurance, Not Just an Exit: It’s natural to pray, "God, get me out of this situation." But try adding, "God, if this season isn't changing yet, fill me with Your power for endurance and patience today."

  2. Acknowledge Your Human Limits: God knows you are flesh and blood. Stop comparing your capacity to everyone else's. Give yourself permission to lower the bar on the non-essential things so you can rest.

  3. Rest in What is Already True: Before your feet even hit the floor in the morning, remind your soul: "I don't have to prove my worth today. I am already loved, rescued, and complete in Christ."

Questions to Lean Into:

  1. What is the primary thing draining your energy right now? How does it feel to know God's power is meant to help you endure it with joy, rather than just avoid it?

  2. Where have you been trying to white-knuckle your way through a situation using your own stamina instead of asking for His might?

  3. What is one small, practical way you can practice extending grace to yourself in your physical or emotional exhaustion this week?

  4. What does "resting in Christ" actually look like for you in the middle of a chaotic week? Is it a change in your schedule, or a change in your internal pressure?

  5. When you hit your limit, do you tend to isolate and pull away from God, or do you view your exhaustion as an invitation to rely on Him?

    A Prayer for Your Week

May the God of hope fill you with all joy

“Father, I am tired and dealing with deep exhaustion today. Please fill me with Your supernatural power—not so I can look perfect to the world, but so I can endure this season with patience and a soft, joyful heart. Thank You that when my strength ends, Your sustaining power is just beginning. Amen.”

Oh my gosh Tammy! This was spot-on and much needed in my journey back to Wisconsin!
