Walking in the light means getting honest about sin

Study Guide: 1 John 1:5-10

Organized garage workshop with tool wall, workbench, blue tarp, ladder, and storage shelves in warm light.

Imagine a friend tells you they finally cleaned out their garage. You walk over to see it.

At first glance, it looks great. The floor is swept. The shelves look organized. Everything seems clean.

Then you notice something.

A large tarp has been thrown over one corner.

You pull back the tarp and find old junk, broken tools, trash, and boxes piled everywhere.

The garage was not actually clean. The mess was simply hidden.

Most of us know what it feels like to do something similar in life.

  • We deal with the things people can see.

  • We clean up our image.

  • We manage appearances.

But there are parts of our lives we would rather keep covered.

  • A habit.

  • A grudge.

  • A secret.

  • A lie.

  • A relationship issue.

  • A pattern we keep excusing.

John's message in 1 John 1:5–10 is simple:

God is not interested in helping us hide the mess better.

He wants to help us deal with it.

The good news is that God does not shine His light on our lives to embarrass us.

He shines His light so He can heal us.

As you go through the study guide, I would suggest reading or listening to the Bible passages in two different bible translations from this list: NIV, NLT, NASB, ESV, NKJV

Setting the scene:

John is writing to believers who are living through confusion and division. Some people who once seemed to be part of the church have left (1 John 2:19). Their departure has shaken the people who remained.

Questions are hanging in the air:

  • Did they discover something we missed?

  • Are we taking Jesus too seriously?

  • Should we loosen our commitment and blend in?

In 1 John 1:1–4, John took everyone back to the foundation: the real Jesus.

  • He heard Him.

  • He saw Him.

  • He touched Him.

Now in verses 5–10, John begins explaining what life with that real Jesus looks like.

One of the key images John uses is light and darkness.

This language would have sounded familiar to Jewish readers. Throughout the Old Testament, light is connected with God's truth, goodness, purity, and guidance.

"The LORD is my light and my salvation." (Psalm 27:1)
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105)

Jewish writings from around this time, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, also used light and darkness as pictures of two different ways of living.

Light represented truth, faithfulness, honesty, and obedience.

Darkness represented deception, rebellion, hidden sin, and life apart from God.

This image would also connect with life in Ephesus.

  • Ephesus was a wealthy Roman city filled with temples, idols, competing beliefs, and pressure to fit into the culture.

  • Many believers were tempted to compromise.

  • Some wanted Jesus while still keeping parts of their old lives untouched.

John says that does not work.

God is light.

If we want fellowship with Him, we must stop hiding.

Summary of the Main Teaching

This part of the letter from John is not about perfection. It is about honesty.

John is not asking believers to pretend they never sin.

He is asking them to stop pretending they do not.

The passage follows a simple flow:

  • God is light.

  • People often hide from the light.

  • Jesus makes forgiveness possible.

  • So step into the light and tell the truth.

Let's walk through it.

1. God Is Light (1 John 1:5)

"God is light; in him there is no darkness at all."

John begins with a statement about God's character.

  • God is completely truthful.

  • Completely trustworthy.

  • Completely good.

  • Completely pure.

There are no hidden motives.

  • No deception.

  • No corruption.

  • No double standards.

  • No darkness.

This matters because our view of God shapes everything else.

If God were partly dark and partly light, hidden sin would not matter much.

But John says God is light all the way through.

  • That means honesty matters.

  • Truth matters.

  • Integrity matters.

  • Because they matter to God.

2. You Cannot Claim Closeness with God While Living a Double Life (1 John 1:6)

"If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in darkness..."

The key word is "walk." John is not talking about a single mistake.

He is talking about a pattern of life.

  • A direction.

  • A lifestyle.

A person may say:

  • "I love God."

  • "I follow Jesus."

  • "I have faith."

But if they consistently hide sin, refuse correction, lie, deceive, or live one way publicly and another privately, John says something is wrong.

Notice that John does not say they occasionally stumble. He says they are walking there.

The issue is not imperfection.

The issue is choosing a life built around hiding.

3. Walking in the Light Means Living Honestly (1 John 1:7)

"If we walk in the light..."

Many people misunderstand this verse. Walking in the light does not mean being flawless.

If it did, nobody could do it.

Walking in the light means living honestly before God.

  • It means bringing things into the open.

  • It means admitting what is true.

  • It means refusing to hide behind excuses.

John says something surprising happens when we do this:

"We have fellowship with one another."

Honesty creates connection.

Pretending creates distance.

Fake people cannot have deep relationships.

Only honest people can.

  • This is true in marriages.

  • Friendships.

  • Families.

  • And churches.

The more we hide, the more isolated we become.

The more truthful we become, the deeper fellowship becomes.

4. Jesus Cleanses Us (1 John 1:7)

"The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."

John's point is simple. We are not forgiven because we perform well. We are forgiven because of Jesus.

The phrase "blood of Jesus" points to His death on the cross.

Jesus took our sin seriously enough to die for it.

John's readers would have immediately understood this because sacrifice was deeply connected to forgiveness in Jewish thinking.

John is saying Jesus accomplished what every sacrifice pointed toward.

  • The answer to sin is not pretending.

  • The answer is Jesus.

5. The Danger of Self-Deception (1 John 1:8)

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves..."

This is one of the most practical verses in the Bible.

Human beings are remarkably good at self-deception.

  • We minimize.

  • We justify.

  • We compare.

  • We blame.

  • We rationalize.

  • We convince ourselves that our problem is not really a problem.

John says the danger is not simply lying to others.

The greater danger is lying to ourselves.

Growth begins when honesty begins.

6. Confession Is Telling the Truth (1 John 1:9)

"If we confess our sins..."

Confession is not simply saying "I'm sorry." The word carries the idea of agreeing with God.

It means:

  • "God, You are right about this."

  • "No excuses."

  • "No blame shifting."

  • "No pretending."

Just truth.

John says when we do this:

"He is faithful and just and will forgive us."

Notice who God is.

  • Faithful.

  • Just.

  • Trustworthy.

  • Dependable.

The focus is not on how good our confession is. The focus is on how good God is.

7. Denying Sin Is Calling God Wrong (1 John 1:10)

John repeats the warning again. Why?

Because we naturally resist honesty.

We would rather manage appearances than face reality.

But John says refusing to admit sin puts us at odds with God's view of reality.

  • God already knows the truth.

  • The invitation is not to convince Him.

  • The invitation is to agree with Him.

Why We Look at "Wrong" and "Right" Applications

Illustration shows people around an open book with a dove above. Text: "The Book of Acts" and more. Date: January 28, 2026.

This passage has been misunderstood in many different directions.

  • Some people use it to create fear.

  • Others use it to excuse sin.

  • Others turn it into a checklist.

  • Others remove the seriousness of sin entirely.

John is doing none of those things.

  • His purpose is pastoral.

  • He is helping confused believers live honestly before God.

If we misunderstand that purpose, we will likely misunderstand the passage.

❌ APPLYING IT WRONG

Wrong Way 1: "Walking in the Light Means Being Perfect"

Many people read this passage and assume walking in the light means never struggling.

John actually says the opposite.

Walking in the light includes admitting your sin. The issue is honesty, not perfection.

Wrong Way 2: "God Forgives, So Sin Is No Big Deal"

Some people use grace as an excuse. John will not allow that. God forgives.

But forgiveness is not permission to keep hiding, lying, cheating, gossiping, or feeding destructive habits.

Wrong Way 3: "Confession Is About Earning Forgiveness"

Some people think confession is a way to convince God to forgive them.

John's point is different.

Jesus already made forgiveness possible.

Confession is how we step into that reality.

Wrong Way 4: "This Passage Is About Constant Fear"

Some people read 1 John and become anxious.

But John's goal is confidence, fellowship, and joy.

  • The light is not trying to destroy you.

  • The light is trying to free you.

Applying it the Right Way:

  1. Start with God's Character

The passage begins with God, not sin.

God is light.

Understanding His goodness makes honesty possible.

  1. Read It as an Invitation

John is inviting believers into openness.

This is not a threat.

It is a welcome.

Come into the light.

Tell the truth.

Receive forgiveness.

Live free.

  1. Understand the Community Aspect

Notice how often fellowship appears.

John is not only concerned about personal spirituality.

  • He is concerned about relationships.

  • Hidden sin damages community.

  • Honesty strengthens it.

  1. Remember the Historical Context

These believers lived in a culture that pressured them to compromise.

  • Some people had already left.

  • Others were tempted to loosen their commitment.

  • John reminds them that following Jesus means living honestly before God rather than blending into the surrounding culture.

That message still matters today.

Experience the God of the Wilderness

Hikers in a canyon with rocky walls and desert foliage. Text: "You're Invited! The Arizona Bible Experience Retreat." Sunny mood.

Throughout the Bible, the desert isn't just a place of heat and sand; it is God’s favorite classroom. It’s where He took Moses to see the burning bush, where He shaped the Israelites into a nation, and where Jesus was prepared for His ministry.

There is something about stepping away from the "safe structures" of the city and into the stillness of the high desert that clears the noise and lets you hear God's voice.

Are you willing to come to the wilderness for a time of preparation and growth? If you feel God moving you out of your comfort zone and into a deeper dependence on Him, we invite you to join us on our off-grid property in Northwest Arizona.

Save the Date: The Pig Out-Play & Praise

Every September, the whole YJJ community rallies together in beautiful North Idaho for our annual gathering. We call it "The Pig Out-Play & Praise"—and for good reason! We smoke a whole hog and briskets for a week of incredible food, deep fellowship, and powerful worship led by two different teams.

The Biblical Connection:

Did you know that God actually built "big meet-ups" into the very rhythm of life for His people? From the Appointed Feasts to the harvest gatherings, the ancient Israelites were commanded to stop, gather, and celebrate what God was doing. The value of these rhythms remains true for us today. We need these "mountain top" moments to refuel and reconnect.
